Facts You Need To Know

Entry Requirements: Passports and a return airline ticket are required for a stay of 30 days or less. Please check your expiration date. There must be a minimum of 6 months validity on your passport from your return trip date. Please refer to our Contact Us/Useful Links page for links to access for further help. It is your responsibility to have proper documentation. Please allow sufficient time for processing.
Language: English is the official language and is widely spoken, as is Spanish.
Money: Local currency is Belize Dollars (BZD). The exchange rate is 1 USD = 2 BZD. U. S. dollars are accepted throughout Belize as well as Visa, MasterCard and traveler's checks in U. S. currency. American Express, Discover and Diner's Club cards are only occasionally accepted. Your bank/credit card company may have a fluctuating bankers buying rate and/or charge a currency conversion fee. Hotels often add an additional percentage (generally not exceeding 5%) when settling your bill at check out with a credit card. We suggest that cash and traveler's checks be in small denominations: $5/$10/$20/$50. Keep traveler's checks in a waterproof pouch as they are void if the ink gets wet. There are no ATMs in Belize, but you can get cash advances on your credit card at a Belize Bank.
Tipping: Generally 10% is acceptable, based on services received. Some hotels include service charge/gratuities for their staff when you pay for your reservations
Taxes: 7% hotel tax. 8% on goods and services (such as meals and car rentals).
Electrical Current: 110V. using the same plug as the U.S. and Canada. Power is often produced by a local generator and can be intermittent.
